What makes Numazu different
Plenty of towns appear in anime. Very few respond the way Numazu did.
Love Live! Sunshine!! is set in and around Numazu, a port city in Shizuoka, and the town leaned into it thoroughly: the shopping arcades, the local bus company, the bay ferry and a long list of individual shops all carry the characters. It stopped being a campaign and became part of how the town presents itself.
For a visitor that means the pilgrimage is not a list of coordinates. The whole place participates.
Getting there
About an hour from Tokyo: Shinkansen to Mishima, then a short local train, or a direct limited express. From Nagoya or Osaka it is on the same Shinkansen corridor.
That hour is the key fact — this is a comfortable day trip, not an expedition.
Two areas
Numazu Station and the shopping streets
The immediate area around the station is where the shops are. Individual businesses display character standees, and many run their own goods and menu collaborations. Wandering is the correct approach; there is no single building to head for.
Uchiura and the bay
South of the city, reached by bus. This is the coastal setting: the bay, the fishing village atmosphere, and Mount Fuji across the water on clear days.
Bus frequency is the constraint. Check the timetable before you head out — services to the bay are not frequent, and getting stranded there in the evening is a real possibility.
Practical notes
- Clear weather transforms this trip. The view of Fuji across the bay is the thing people remember, and it is entirely weather-dependent. Winter mornings are the most reliable.
- Bring cash. Small shops in the arcades and the bay area are not all cashless.
- Numazu Port has a fish market and food, which solves lunch.
- Series anniversaries and local events draw large crowds; ordinary weekends are relaxed.
Combining it
- Mishima is on the way and has a large suspension bridge with Fuji views.
- Izu Peninsula continues south if you want hot springs.
- If you are heading west, Numazu sits neatly between Tokyo and Nagoya on the Shinkansen.
The other half of Love Live!
The original series is set around Kanda Myojin, a major shrine seven minutes' walk from Akihabara in Tokyo. It appears throughout, and the shrine shop still carries series goods alongside its charms — including charms for IT equipment, which the electronics district comes here for.
That one costs almost no travel time on a day you are already in Akihabara, which makes it the easier half to fit in.
Etiquette
The shops displaying character goods are ordinary local businesses. Buy something if you photograph their display. In the bay area, the fishing village is a working one, and residents are not part of the attraction.
