Ghibli Museum, Mitaka
Advance-ticket-only museum designed by Hayao Miyazaki. No tickets are sold at the door.
The museum was designed by Hayao Miyazaki himself and is deliberately small, dense and unmarked — there is no fixed route and no photography inside. It holds an exclusive short film screened only here, a full-size Catbus for children, and a rooftop Robot Soldier. Tickets are date and time specific and go on sale on the 10th of the previous month at 10:00 Japan time via Lawson Ticket.
Why it is worth it
The short film changes periodically and has never been released on video anywhere. It genuinely cannot be seen outside this building.

When to go
Every slot is capacity controlled, so it never feels crowded inside. The difficulty is entirely in buying the ticket.
Good to know
Overseas residents can also buy through authorised travel agents, which is often easier than the Lawson system. Set an alarm for the 10th at 10:00 JST.

Common questions
How do I get to the Ghibli Museum from Tokyo Station?
Take the JR Chuo line from Tokyo Station to Mitaka, about 30 minutes, then walk about 15 minutes through Inokashira Park to the museum. A community shuttle bus also runs from Mitaka Station, but the park walk is more pleasant and part of the experience.
