Suzume

A film about places that are gone, and some of its locations are gone too.

Suzume travels the length of Japan, so the pilgrimage is a route rather than a place. **Hijiribashi**, the arched bridge visible from the Ochanomizu station platforms in Tokyo, is on the key visual and is the most recognisable single location. The shopping arcades in **Kobe** — Higashiyama and Ninomiya — are the model for the street where Rumi's bar is. **Yawatahama** in Ehime is where Suzume arrives by ferry. There is a fitting complication: the ferry terminal drawn in the film was the old one, and it has since been demolished. For a film about closing doors on places that no longer exist, that is not the worst thing to find.
