Kiritappu Cape & marsh
The cliffs and fog the author grew up with, and the landscape he said stayed in his mind.
A cape of grassy cliffs on the Pacific, often in fog, with a large marshland behind it and sea otters and seals offshore. This is the landscape Monkey Punch grew up in, and it is the reason to make the journey to Hamanaka beyond the exhibition itself.
Why it is worth it
Eastern Hokkaido is a long way from anywhere, and this is what you go for. The exhibition is free and takes an hour; the cape is why you spend the day.
When to go
Almost always empty.
Good to know
Fog is common and can close the view entirely — that is the local character rather than bad luck. Bring layers; it is cold on the cape even in summer.
Lupin the Third
The cliffs and fog the author grew up with.
