Museum

Kyoto International Manga Museum

A former elementary school holding roughly 300,000 volumes — and you can sit down and read them.

The museum keeps its collection on open shelves along the corridors of a preserved 1929 school building, and visitors are free to take a volume outside and read on the lawn. It holds manga from the Meiji era to the present, plus a large section of translated editions from around the world.

Why it is worth it

Most museums show you manga behind glass. This one lets you read it.
