Museum
Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum
Ghibli's own site names the Kodakara-yu bathhouse here as a major reference for the bathhouse in Spirited Away.
An open-air museum in Koganei Park where historic Tokyo buildings have been relocated and restored — shops, houses, a tram, and Kodakara-yu, a grand 1929 bathhouse built in the temple-roof style. Ghibli's own site names it as a place they drew on heavily for the bathhouse in Spirited Away, and Miyazaki has spoken about the museum repeatedly.
Why it is worth it
Unlike most claimed models, this one is stated by the studio rather than inferred by fans. It is also an excellent museum in its own right, and 400 yen.
When to go
Quiet on weekdays; busier at weekends.
Good to know
Closed Mondays. It is large and mostly outdoors — allow two hours and dress for the weather. Combine it with the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, which is 20 minutes away, but note that the Ghibli Museum needs tickets bought in advance.
