Komachi-dori & Tsurugaoka Hachimangu

The shopping street and shrine at the Kamakura end of the line — food, souvenirs and the town's main sight.

Komachi-dori runs from Kamakura Station to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the shrine at the centre of the old city. The street is dense with food stalls, sweets and craft shops, and it is the practical place to eat on a Kamakura day — the coast itself has far fewer options.

Why it is worth it

The coast has the views but almost nowhere to eat. This is where a Kamakura day gets its lunch.

When to go

Very busy on weekends and holidays, especially 11:00–15:00.

Good to know

Eat here rather than on the coast. The shrine grounds behind it are large and much calmer than the street.
