Anime location

Shinjuku Gyoen

Almost the entire film takes place here, and specifically at the gazebo in the Japanese garden.

A large garden five minutes from Shinjuku station, laid out in French, English and Japanese sections. The Japanese garden — the gazebo, the wisteria trellis, the drum bridge, the pond and the old Taiwan-style pavilion — is where the film is set, and the reproduction is close enough to work through frame by frame.

Why it is worth it

It is the most concentrated pilgrimage in Tokyo: a 46-minute film, one garden, ninety minutes to do properly. And it is a very good garden.

When to go

Very busy in cherry blossom season; calm otherwise.

Good to know

The film is set in the rainy season, so June is when it looks right — go in the rain rather than avoiding it. Closed Mondays. Alcohol and sports equipment are not permitted, and the garden closes earlier than most parks, so check the last entry time.

The Garden of Words

Almost the entire film, in one garden.
