Daikichiyama Observation Deck
The hilltop where the two leads climb with their instruments. A 20-minute walk up, free, with the whole town below.
A wide paved path climbs the hill behind Ujigami Shrine to an open deck looking north over Uji and the river. It is the setting of one of the best-known scenes in the series, and the view is genuinely good.
Why it is worth it
It is free, it is open at any hour, and unlike most of Uji it is rarely crowded. The climb is easy enough in ordinary shoes.
When to go
Quiet even when the town below is busy.
Good to know
There is no lighting on the path, so do not plan a night visit unless you bring a torch. Allow 20 minutes up and 15 down, and combine it with Ujigami Shrine, which is a World Heritage site at the bottom.
